Ecodesign of a ballast water treatment systems (BWTS). In the development of the project, environmental aspects were identified to improve the energy consumption of the plant during its use and the emissions of the electric generator, as well as certain materials used in the manufacturing of the treatment system, such as steel pipes , accessories and reactors or the bronze of the pump.

For the development of the treatment system, the improvement of these environmental aspects was considered, through strategies aimed at reducing the energy consumption of the plant and the optimization of the components used to optimize the use of materials. After the analysis and assessment of the ideas for environmental improvement proposed, it was decided to install a new component in order to optimize the internal flows of the plant. This component, despite assuming a slight increase in the use of materials in the manufacture of the plant, becomes effective in its phase of use. According to the foreseen operating assumptions, it supposes an approximate reduction of 36% of energy consumption compared to the plant originally planned. This means that 33% less CO2 is emitted into the atmosphere in each operation cycle.
