Burdinola develops and certifies 4 new Environmental Product Declarations with the support of IK Ingeniería

Burdinola S. Coop is a company founded in 1978 that specializes in the design, development, manufacture and installation of laboratory furniture, particularly fume cupboards and wall bench systems. The company is specialized in laboratory planning, integration and installation, covering all stages of project management and development. Its product range includes laboratory furniture and equipment such as fume cupboards, specific chambers for working with nanoparticles (Nano Chamber) and API chambers. Burdinola has been manufacturing its products since 1978, and 100% of its components are of European origin.

The company is a pioneer in the application of sustainable criteria to the design and development of its products, from the implementation of an ISO 14006 Ecodesign Management System to the certification of PEFC Chain of Custody for its wooden components.

In line with this commitment to eco-innovation, we have recently collaborated with the company in the development and certification of four Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) covering four families of its laboratory fume cupboards.

The objective of the study was to assess the environmental impact of these laboratory fume cupboards throughout their entire life cycle. The products are manufactured at Burdinola’s plant in Amoroto (Bizkaia), and the studies have been certified in accordance with ISO 14025 and the Product Category Rules of the International EPD System, c-PCR-021 Furniture and components of furniture (EN 15804+A2).

The models analysed were:

  • ELITE (variantes de 2400 mm, 2100 mm, 1800 mm, 1500 mm y 1200 mm).
  • ST (variantes de 2400 mm, 2100 mm, 1800 mm, 1500 mm y 1200 mm).
  • AC (variantes de 1800 mm y 1500 mm).
  • D (1800 mm y 1500 mm).

At IK Ingeniería, we have supported the company in the process of collecting life cycle inventory data for the manufacture of the fume cupboards using a life cycle approach, analysing the impact from raw material extraction through to the point the product leaves the factory, including its use, maintenance and end-of-life stages. We have also accompanied the company throughout the verification audit and the entire certification process.
