IK Ingeniería has successfully supported CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles, S.A.) in the development of the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for a CIVITY EMU train manufactured for SNCF, in line with the .international standards of the International EPD System
This project has been developed in accordance with the product category rules “PCR 2009:05 Rolling stock and parts thereof”, specific to the railway sector, ensuring comparability and transparency of results. It is based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach that enables the quantification of key environmental indicators such as carbon footprint, resource consumption, and associated emissions.
The EPD developed provides a comprehensive and verified assessment of the train’s environmental impact throughout its entire life cycle, including key stages such as manufacturing, operation, maintenance, and end of life.
The project required a high level of technical coordination across multiple departments, as well as an extensive process of data collection, validation, and consolidation. At IK Ingeniería, we led the full development of the Environmental Product Declaration, coordinating the collection and validation of data across the entire value chain and modelling the train’s life cycle in accordance with the requirements of the reference PCR.
Our work included the calculation of environmental impacts, the preparation of technical documentation, and support throughout the external verification process, ensuring a robust and transparent outcome.
With this EPD, CAF and SNCF strengthen their commitment to environmental transparency in the transport sector and to the continuous improvement of the environmental performance of their railway solutions, contributing to a more sustainable and responsible mobility model.
For our part, this project further consolidates IK Ingeniería’s position as a trusted technical partner in the development of complex environmental declarations for the industrial and transport sectors, providing methodological rigour and extensive experience in the application of international standards.
The EPD has already been published and is available for consultation here.
