IK Ingeniería supports voestalpine Railway Systems JEZ in updating the EPD of its manganese railway crossings

IK Ingeniería has supported voestalpine Railway Systems JEZ, S.L. (formerly JEZ Sistemas Ferroviarios, S.L.), a company specialised in the manufacture of railway track components such as switches, closure rails and crossings, in the update of the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its cast manganese railway crossings.

This update reinforces the company’s commitment to the development of more sustainable railway infrastructure, promoting high-durability and low-maintenance solutions that help minimise environmental impact.

The declared unit corresponds to 1,000 kg of manganese crossing manufactured at the Llodio plant (Álava, Spain). This component is the central element of a railway turnout, designed to guide wheelsets through the track intersection area.

The environmental assessment has been carried out in accordance with ISO 14025, EN 15804:2012+A2:2019/AC:2021, and PCR 2019:14 Construction Products (version 2.0.1), covering all life cycle stages from raw material extraction and manufacturing to transport and the supply chain.

IK Ingeniería has been responsible for collecting life cycle inventory data, performing the environmental assessment of the results, and updating the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), as well as supporting the company throughout the audit, verification and certification process.

The Environmental Product Declaration is already published and available for consultation here.
